Volunteering for a Greener Future: Our Day at Dolphin Boatyard

Volunteering for a Greener Future: Our Day at Dolphin Boatyard

At Agena, we believe in giving back to the environment and supporting sustainability efforts. Recently, four of our dedicated team members, Katie Britto, Head of Business Development for Marine Assets, Chloe Nadin, Sales Support, Dean Sellick, Technical Support Engineer and Stephen Maddick, ANPR Administrator, spent a day volunteering at the Ocean Conservation Trust’s growing facility in Galmpton Creek. This facility is crucial for the restoration of seagrass meadows, which are vital habitats for marine life.

A Day of Hard Work and Rewarding Efforts

Katie, Chloe, Dean and Stephen joined the OCT’s Aquaculture team to help with various tasks essential for the growth and nurture of seagrass seedlings. The day was filled with planting, feeding, and cleaning these delicate seedlings. The seagrass grown at this facility will eventually be transplanted around coastlines to restore damage to habitats caused by boating activities, anchoring, and destructive fishing techniques.

    Why Seagrass Matters

Seagrass meadows are incredibly important to the health and biodiversity of our marine ecosystems. They provide a safe haven for young fish stocks and species such as seahorses, offering shelter, protection and food. In addition to this, seagrass meadows absorb vast amounts of carbon, remove harmful algal blooms, and prevent erosion of our coasts by anchoring sediments on the seabed. Unfortunately, these vital habitats have been severely damaged over the years. Restoration efforts like those of the Ocean Conservation Trust are critical to reversing this damage and ensuring a healthy future for our oceans.

    The Impact of Volunteering

Volunteering for the Ocean Conservation Trust was not just about giving back; it was also an opportunity for our team to connect with nature and understand the importance of marine conservation. Katie Britto shared, “It was incredibly rewarding to contribute to such a meaningful cause. Seeing the direct impact of our efforts on the seagrass seedlings was inspiring.”

Chloe added, “Participating in this project opened my eyes to the crucial role seagrass plays in our marine ecosystems. It was a humbling experience to be part of a team working towards a healthier ocean.”

    Looking ahead

At Agena, we are committed to supporting initiatives that promote environmental sustainability. We are proud of Katie, Chloe, Dean and Stephen for their hard work and dedication, and we look forward to more opportunities to make a positive impact on our environment.
